Josh Maja leaves West Brom for Le Havre in Ligue 1 switch

Nigeria and England forward Josh Maja has joined French club Le Havre AC from West Bromwich Albion on a free transfer, bringing the 27-year-old back to Ligue 1.

Maja has agreed a contract with Le Havre until 30 June 2027 and will wear the number nine shirt. The centre-forward moves to France after two seasons with West Brom, where he arrived from Girondins de Bordeaux as a free agent in August 2023.

His return to Ligue 1 follows a spell in which he established experience across the English and French leagues. Maja has made 47 Ligue 1 appearances and scored nine goals, while his record in the Championship stands at 110 appearances and 19 goals. He has also scored 16 times in 38 Ligue 2 matches.

Maja previously played for Bordeaux after leaving Sunderland in January 2019 for a fee of €1.5m. He spent part of the 2021-22 season on loan at Stoke City before returning to the French club, completing the campaign in France ahead of his move to West Brom.

Born in London, Maja came through youth football at Fulham and Manchester City before joining Sunderland’s academy. He progressed into Sunderland’s senior set-up and made his senior career in England before moving abroad to Bordeaux.

Le Havre’s new forward brings experience of both the Championship and France’s top two divisions, along with a career total that includes 15 League One goals and three Premier League goals. His move from West Brom was completed on 31 July 2026, with no transfer fee involved.

Maja’s contract at Le Havre runs until 30 June 2027.
