WAFCON 2026: Four Zambia threats Nigeria must contain after Egypt rout

Nigeria’s Super Falcons face a crucial test against Zambia at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, with the defending champions needing a response after their disappointing opening defeat by Malawi.

The Super Falcons lost 3-2 in their first group match, leaving them unable to afford another setback as they attempt to keep their title defence alive. Their next opponents, however, began the tournament in emphatic fashion, beating Egypt 6-0 and underlining the attacking threat they possess.

Nigeria will need to find a way to limit four key players from the Zambia side, known as the Copper Queens.

Her pace, movement and capacity to create chances give Zambia another consistent outlet in the final third. Nigeria will therefore have to deal with more than just Banda if they are to prevent the Copper Queens from creating dangerous situations.

Midfield balance also key for Nigeria

Grace Chanda is expected to have an important role for Zambia. The creative midfielder’s technical quality and vision allow her to influence the rhythm of the game and use her passing to unlock opposing defences.

If Chanda is given time and space in midfield, she could help Zambia control possession and provide the service needed by their forwards. Nigeria’s ability to disrupt her influence will be an important part of their defensive plan.

Ireen Lungu completes the group of players Nigeria must contain. Her energy and composure in midfield give Zambia balance, while her ability to regain possession, dictate play and contribute in both defensive and attacking phases makes her a significant figure in the team.

Containing Zambia’s attacking influence will be central to the Super Falcons’ hopes of securing a much-needed victory.

The ten-time African champions must remain compact without the ball, compete effectively in midfield and make the most of their chances when they arise. After defeat by Malawi, Nigeria know another difficult result could seriously damage their hopes of progressing and defending their WAFCON crown.
