Joy Omewa: Nigeria striker joins Swedish champions BK Hacken on three-year deal

Super Falcons forward Joy Omewa has signed a three-year contract with reigning Swedish champions BK Hacken, completing a move that follows a prolific season in Denmark and a brief spell in England.

The 23-year-old Nigeria international joins the Damallsvenskan leaders on a free transfer after leaving English Women’s Championship side Nottingham Forest, and will link up with compatriot Halimatu Ayinde in Gothenburg.

BK Hacken confirmed that Omewa will arrive after her international duties with Nigeria at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (Wafcon) in Morocco, where the Super Falcons are seeking to retain their continental title.

From Danish double winner to Sweden

Omewa’s switch comes on the back of a standout 2024-25 campaign with Danish side Fortuna Hjørring, where she became one of the league’s most feared attackers.

The pacey striker scored 22 goals in 24 league matches, driving Hjørring to a domestic league and cup double and attracting interest from several clubs across Europe.

Her form in Denmark earned widespread recognition and laid the foundations for her move to Sweden, where Hacken are aiming to strengthen their attacking options for both domestic and European competitions.

Omewa says her time in Denmark was decisive in shaping her as a more ruthless finisher.

“I mainly developed my ability to score goals, especially positional play in the penalty area. I worked a lot on mastering how to be as efficient as possible inside the box,” she told the club’s official website.

‘The right place for me’

The former Confluence Queens forward insists the decision to join Hacken was straightforward, describing the Swedish champions as the ideal environment to continue her rise in European football.

” I know that BK Hacken is a fantastic club that helps its talents develop. I feel that this is the right place for me,” she added.

Omewa becomes only the second Nigerian in the current Hacken squad, joining experienced midfielder Ayinde, who has been a key figure at the club and is also a regular for the Super Falcons.

Her arrival is expected to increase Hacken’s attacking depth as they chase further domestic honours and aim to make an impact in the UEFA Women’s Champions League.

BK Hacken’s football director Martin Ericsson believes the Nigerian forward will bring both physical presence and a clinical edge to the side’s frontline.

” Joy is a physically dominant player with a lot of power, but also a striker who is involved in the game and a killer in the box. Her instinct for scoring goals is clear and she is always looking for the next opportunity,” Ericsson declared.

Focus on Wafcon before Sweden debut

Omewa is currently in camp with Nigeria ahead of the 2026 Wafcon in Morocco, where the nine-time African champions are targeting yet another title.

Her performances at the tournament are likely to be closely watched in Sweden, with Hacken expecting her to hit the ground running once she joins up with the squad.

For now, the forward’s focus remains on helping the Super Falcons secure continental glory – before beginning a new chapter in her club career with the Swedish champions.
