Julian Alvarez saga: Atletico Madrid star ready to snub pre-season in push for Barcelona move

Argentina forward Julian Alvarez is prepared to skip the start of Atletico Madrid’s pre-season training as he attempts to force through a move to Barcelona, according to reports in Spain.

The 24-year-old striker publicly confirmed during the 2026 World Cup that he wants to leave Atletico, comments which have sent shockwaves through Spanish football and intensified speculation over his future.

Atletico, however, are refusing to back down and are insisting that any club wishing to sign Alvarez must pay his full release clause – set at €500m (£422m).

However, the same report adds that people close to Alvarez say he has no intention of returning to Atletico’s training ground on the scheduled day.

The forward is thought to be considering staying away in order to exert maximum pressure on the Madrid club to agree a sale to Barcelona.

During Argentina’s campaign at the 2026 World Cup, Alvarez made his position clear, telling reporters that he wished to leave Atletico Madrid.
