Landon Emenalo begins Celtic loan after delayed Chelsea switch

Landon Emenalo has joined up with Celtic’s first-team squad after completing a season-long loan move from Chelsea for the 2026/27 campaign.
The 18-year-old left-back, son of former Nigeria defender and Chelsea technical director Michael Emenalo, completed the transfer to the Scottish champions in September.
However, an injury rehabilitation programme at Chelsea delayed his arrival in Scotland. Celtic confirmed on 13 October that Emenalo had reported for duty and started training with his new team-mates.
The move gives the defender an opportunity to continue his development outside Chelsea’s academy and compete for senior football with the Scottish champions.
Emenalo joined Chelsea’s academy when he was seven and progressed through the club’s youth system. During the previous campaign, he became a regular starter for Chelsea Under-21s.
His performances helped the team finish top of the Premier League 2 table, enhancing his reputation as one of the emerging players in Chelsea’s academy.
He has also had experience of training with established first-team players. Emenalo featured for Chelsea during the club’s pre-season tour of Asia and Australia, gaining exposure to senior football before his move to Scotland.
The teenager’s arrival at Celtic has attracted particular interest because of his family background. His father, Michael, played for Nigeria during his career and later moved into football administration.
Michael Emenalo went on to become Chelsea’s technical director, where he held an influential role in the club’s football operations. Landon now begins his own career away from the academy in which he developed, with the chance to build a reputation based on his performances.
The loan will expose him to a different football environment and offers the prospect of competing for first-team opportunities. Having spent most of his development at Chelsea, the move to Celtic represents a significant next step in his progress.
His initial absence was caused by the rehabilitation programme, but his arrival and return to training provide the opportunity to resume his development with the Scottish club.
Emenalo will wear the number 12 shirt at Celtic and will be looking to make his debut when selected. Celtic gain an additional defensive option, while Chelsea will follow his progress during the campaign.
For the young defender, the immediate task is to turn the promise shown at academy level into experience in senior football as he begins a new chapter in Scotland.
