Former Real Madrid player Predrag Mijatovic has called for patience with Vinicius Junior, insisting Diomande’s impact does not make him a better player than the Brazil forward.

Vinicius has faced considerable criticism this season after a noticeable dip in form. He is also serving a four-match suspension in La Liga following his dismissal against Villarreal.

Speaking on the programme El Larguero, Mijatovic said: “I miss a little bit of Vinicius, and I am convinced he will recover. We have to give him some time and not put too much pressure on him.”

The former Real Madrid sporting director also noted the frustration shown by Vinicius when he was substituted in the 70th minute of Wednesday’s Champions League match against Leipzig. The Spanish side won the game 4-1, but Vinicius left the pitch visibly disappointed after being replaced by Diomande.

Mijatovic said Diomande had the ability to influence matches, but rejected any suggestion that his performance placed him ahead of Vinicius.

“With Diomande, we have a player capable of making a difference, but that does not mean he is better than Vinicius,” he said. “In this situation, Vinicius can easily return to his best level. I do not think there is any need to rush him. We have to wait, and his best days will certainly come.”

Mijatovic’s view is similar to that of Kylian Mbappe, who also spoke about Vinicius after the Leipzig match.

“It is good that Vinicius feels sad because he wants to give a lot to the team and the supporters,” Mbappe said. “He has to remain calm and be proud of himself. He is a great player with tremendous talent.”

Mijatovic identified Jude Bellingham and Thibaut Courtois as the two Real Madrid players who impressed him most against Leipzig.

“Bellingham is performing brilliantly and playing exceptionally well. He is a key player for the team,” Mijatovic said. “He gives the side a lot of confidence, and Mourinho relies on him heavily because the players admire him. He always gives his best.”

Mijatovic was equally emphatic in his assessment of Courtois, describing him as the finest goalkeeper in the world.

“He is the best goalkeeper in the world, not only this year but in previous years as well,” he said. “Courtois has tremendous confidence, and his saves are no less important than the goals or attacks created by his team-mates. The sense of security he provides is essential for any great team.”
