Netherlands-born striker under consideration for Nigeria call-up

Nigeria are considering a Netherlands-born striker of Nigerian descent after George Ilenikhena chose to represent the Super Eagles, according to an exclusive report by OwnGoalNigeria.com.

The player was born in the Netherlands to Nigerian parents and has not represented the country of his birth at any level. He is therefore eligible to play for Nigeria if he receives a call-up.

He has contacted a representative of Nigeria coach Eric Chelle, with the move potentially adding another attacking option to the senior national team.

Chelle has previously made clear that he is open to selecting more players of Nigerian descent for both the U23 side and the senior team. He is coach of both teams.

OwnGoalNigeria.com reports that Chelle has begun the process of having the striker exclusively scouted. A final decision on whether to invite him into the Nigeria set-up will be made after that assessment.

The development follows Ilenikhena’s decision to play for Nigeria at senior level. Born in Nigeria and raised in France, the striker was eligible to represent either country but opted for Nigeria and has already made his debut in the AFCON qualifiers.

The latest player has not yet been capped by the Netherlands or any other national team, leaving him free to represent Nigeria if selected. While his approach has brought him to the attention of the Super Eagles coach, no final call-up decision has been announced.
