Nico Williams leaves Spain camp with thigh injury

Nico Williams has left the Spain squad after reporting discomfort in his left thigh and will return to Athletic Bilbao without a replacement being called up.

The winger scored Spain’s fourth goal in their 4-1 victory over Croatia on Tuesday, finding the net in the 89th minute in the second round of their Nations League group matches.

The Spanish Football Federation confirmed that Williams would miss the two remaining fixtures of the international break. Spain face the Czech Republic in Oviedo on Saturday before travelling to Split to play Croatia again next Tuesday.

Spain will therefore complete the camp with one fewer player in their squad.

A statement from the media office of La Roja said: “Nico Williams is leaving the Spain squad. The international reported discomfort in his left thigh after the match played in Seville against Croatia.

“His condition was monitored closely during the day off and, as the discomfort persisted, he did not take part in Thursday’s training session.”

The federation added: “Following the medical examinations carried out today by the Spanish Football Federation’s medical services, it was decided that he should leave the current camp to continue his recovery.

“The medical services at Athletic Bilbao have been kept informed of the player’s progress at all times. He will continue his treatment and recovery under the supervision of his club.”

Spain, the reigning European Championship and World Cup champions, top their Nations League group with six points. They began the campaign with a 3-2 win over England before defeating Croatia 4-1.
