Davido Uses FIFA World Cup Countdown Concert to Spotlight Nigeria’s Security Crisis

Nigerian Afrobeats superstar, Davido, used the global platform of the 2026 FIFA World Cup Countdown Concert to draw international attention to Nigeria’s growing security challenges.

The award-winning singer appeared on stage wearing a custom-made black leather jacket decorated with green buttons bearing the names of pupils and teachers abducted during a deadly school attack in Oyo State.

The abduction, which occurred in May 2026, plunged the country into mourning after armed assailants reportedly carried out coordinated attacks on three schools in the Ahoro-Esinele and Yawota areas of Oriire Local Government Area, kidnapping several students and teachers.

Public outrage intensified following reports confirming the death of a mathematics teacher, Michael Oyedokun.

The tragedy sparked widespread condemnation after a disturbing video allegedly showing the teacher being killed by his captors surfaced online.

The incident triggered protests across parts of the state, with residents, students, and education stakeholders blocking major roads while demanding improved security measures for schools and rural communities.

Using his performance to amplify calls for justice, Davido displayed the message “BRING THEM HOME” prominently on the back of his jacket, urging authorities to secure the release of victims still being held captive.

Speaking backstage before taking to the stage, the singer expressed deep sorrow over the incident and called on both federal and state governments to intensify efforts toward rescuing the abducted victims and strengthening security across vulnerable communities.
