Nwabali faces battle to unseat Okoye as Super Eagles’ first-choice goalkeeper

Stanley Nwabali will not walk straight back into the Super Eagles starting line-up, with Maduka Okoye set to remain Nigeria’s first-choice goalkeeper when competitive international football resumes in September.

Sources close to head coach Eric Chelle indicate the Udinese goalkeeper is expected to keep his place for the upcoming international window, despite Nwabali’s recent return to club action with Chippa United and renewed debate over the national team pecking order.

Nwabali had departed South African club Chippa United in February to pursue what has been described as a new challenge, a move that coincided with a shift in the goalkeeping hierarchy for Nigeria. In his absence, Chelle turned to Okoye for key friendly matches after the Super Eagles finished third at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Those appearances have strengthened Okoye’s standing within the squad, and insiders suggest Chelle is determined to reward that form and continuity rather than immediately reverting to his previous AFCON number one.

Competition for Nigeria’s gloves

Nwabali has recently rejoined Chippa United and impressed in a friendly tournament, performances that quickly reignited speculation that he would automatically reclaim the Super Eagles’ number one jersey.

However, Chelle is understood to be prioritising strong competition in the goalkeeping department and is not prepared to guarantee the shirt to any individual. Maintaining Okoye as first choice is seen as part of that strategy, with Nwabali having to prove himself again at international level following his club return.

Okoye is now expected to begin the AFCON 2027 qualifying campaign as Nigeria’s starting goalkeeper. The 24-year-old, who plays his club football in Serie A with Udinese, will do so in the knowledge that there is significant pressure behind him.

Alongside Nwabali, Arsenal goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo is also regarded as a contender for the position and is considered to be “waiting in the wing for a chance”. Both Nwabali and Okonkwo are viewed as realistic challengers to Okoye’s status in the months ahead.

No automatic reinstatement

While Nwabali’s displays for Nigeria at the last AFCON have kept his name firmly in public conversation, figures close to the national-team set-up stress that past performances alone will not decide future selections.

The decision to stick with Okoye when Nigeria return to action in September is being framed internally as part of a merit-based approach, with Chelle keen to ensure that every position in the side is contested.

Nwabali’s task now will be to maintain his form with Chippa United and use any future call-ups to convince Chelle that he merits elevation above Okoye once more. For the moment, though, the signal from the Super Eagles camp is clear: there will be no automatic reinstatement, and the battle for Nigeria’s number one shirt is very much open.
