The Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) has levied a fine of N1 million against Heartland Queens Football Club due to an incident involving the assault of match officials during their Premiership game against Remo Stars Ladies on April 16, 2025, at the Dan Anyiam Stadium in Owerri, Imo State.
In a statement released on Friday, April 18, the NWFL condemned the behavior exhibited by both the club’s officials and supporters, labeling the assault as a grave violation of the principles of fair play and respect for match officials.
Modupe Shabi, the Chief Operating Officer of the NWFL, indicated that the decision was made after a comprehensive review of the match officials’ report and an investigation that validated the disruptive conduct of individuals linked to the club during Match No. 92 of the 2024/2025 NWFL Premiership season.
Referencing Article 26.1 of its regulations, the NWFL COO highlighted that “any player or official who physically assaults a match official or any other individual during a match, whether through verbal intimidation or any form of offensive body language, is subject to a fine of N1,000,000.00 and potential expulsion.”
The league authority also cautioned that such infractions could result in a ban of up to one year for the venue where the incident occurred.
The NWFL called on Heartland Queens to provide education to their officials and supporters regarding the significance of fair play and respect for match officials, emphasizing that this sanction aims to deter future misconduct.
This fine is part of the NWFL’s ongoing efforts to combat violence and misconduct within the league, reinforcing its strict zero-tolerance policy towards actions that threaten the integrity of the sport.
