NWFL Premiership: Bayelsa Queens book Super Six Playoffs qualification

By Oyediji Oluwaseun Babatunde

Bayelsa Queens have secured their place in the NWFL Super Six Tournament following a straightforward victory over Benue Queens.

The team from Yenagoa achieved their ninth win of the regular season against the struggling side from Makurdi. Coach Whyte Ogbonda made several adjustments to the lineup that previously triumphed over Naija Ratels in the President Federation Cup held in Benin City, notably giving Harmony John, a promising talent acquired from Golden Sun Sports Club in Yenagoa, her first start and appearance for Bayelsa Queens.

John quickly made an impact, scoring the opening goal in the 10th minute after a scramble in front of the goal. This solitary goal remained the only score of the first half. Following the break, Coach Ogbonda implemented three substitutions, introducing Vera Samuel, Dooshima Tarnum, and Precious Oscar, which added significant attacking strength.

Their persistent efforts bore fruit when Olabiyi Alaba scored with a header, capitalizing on a rebound from Dooshima Tarnum’s shot that hit the crossbar, thereby doubling Bayelsa Queens’ lead.

Despite the visitors’ goalkeeper making several remarkable saves to limit the score, the Prosperity Girls are now focused on their upcoming match against Adamawa Queens in matchday 12 of the league.

After the match, Technical Adviser Whyte Ogbonda expressed confidence in their Super Six qualification, stating, “We played well, and while there were expectations for more goals, our priority was securing the three points, which we achieved.”
