Obasogie set to return for Bendel Insurance after transfer paperwork delay
Super Eagles goalkeeper Amas Obasogie will resume action for Bendel Insurance once his international transfer documentation is completed, assistant coach Jolomi Atune has confirmed.
Obasogie was unavailable for Insurance’s opening Euromatch NPFL fixture against Warri Wolves on Sunday, 30 August, despite having returned to the Benin club ahead of the 2026/2027 season.
The 26-year-old goalkeeper’s absence came into focus after Bendel Insurance conceded an early goal in a 2-1 victory over Warri Wolves. A goalkeeping mistake four minutes after kick-off allowed Towo Eventus to put the hosts ahead against his former club.
The error prompted questions over why Obasogie had not been selected to start the important opening match for the Benin Arsenal.
Atune, who represented head coach Kennedy Boboye during the post-match news conference, said the goalkeeper’s transfer from Tanzania had not yet been fully processed.
“He is still around with us. You know, he’s coming from a club outside of the country. So, time is needed to complete his paperwork and transfer formalities,” Atune explained.
Obasogie was previously with Bendel Insurance before joining Tanzanian club Singida Black Stars. He returned to his former side before the start of the new domestic campaign.
The goalkeeper was also part of the Super Eagles squad that won a bronze medal at the 2025 AFCON in Morocco, adding international experience to a Bendel Insurance team adjusting to several changes.
Although Warri Wolves struck first, Insurance recovered to secure all three points. Atune said the result was particularly valuable because of the difficulties usually associated with the first league match of a season.
“I am happy we got the important three points. The first game is usually difficult. Our team will get better as the league progresses. I know we will not disappoint our people.
“When Warri Wolves scored very early, I remained positive because I knew we were going to come back and beat them. I believe in the boys we have,” Atune said.
The assistant coach also acknowledged that the squad still requires time to develop its understanding, with new arrivals yet to fully settle alongside the existing players.
Bendel Insurance will therefore continue the early part of the season without Obasogie until the necessary paperwork and transfer formalities are concluded. Atune remains confident that the team will improve as the Euromatch NPFL campaign progresses.
