Oghenekaro Etebo: Why I chose Genclerbirligi despite European interest
By Saheed Afolabi
Nigeria international Oghenekaro Etebo has opened up about his decision to join Turkish second division side Genclerbirligi, citing the support he received from the club during his recovery as a key factor.
The 28-year-old midfielder joined Genclerbirligi as a free agent despite receiving numerous offers from other European clubs.
“A lot of people were calling me, asking, ‘Why would you go to a second division club in Turkey?’” Etebo explained to Sports Boom.
“From January until the end of the season, I didn’t pay for anything, and I trained with the team 100%.”
He emphasized the coach’s words: “Etebo, I’d tell you something: even before you sign for any team, remember that these guys are the ones that looked after you. So, it’s very important.”
Currently, Genclerbirligi sits fourth in the TFF First League with 11 points from six matches. They are set to face Keçiörengücü in their next game on Saturday, September 28.
