NNL 2026-27 season to begin on 31 October
The 2026-27 Nigeria National League (NNL) season will start on Saturday, 31 October, following the approval of the date at the competition’s Annual General Meeting in Owerri.
The decision was ratified by clubs and league officials during Friday’s AGM, which was held in Owerri ahead of the new campaign.
Participating teams will be divided into four conferences: Southern Conference A, Southern Conference B, Northern Conference A and Northern Conference B.
The structure is designed to provide a competitive promotion race, with clubs competing for places in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), the top tier of Nigerian football.
At the conclusion of the season, the winners of each conference will earn automatic promotion to the NPFL. That will give four NNL clubs the opportunity to move up to the top flight for the following campaign.
The four promoted teams will then take part in a mini-tournament to decide the overall NNL champions for the 2026-27 season. The competition will therefore determine both the clubs moving into the NPFL and the team crowned champions of the second-tier league.
The new campaign is expected to produce another closely contested battle for promotion, with a number of clubs seeking to secure a place among Nigeria’s leading teams.
Sporting Lagos, Inter Lagos, Doma United and Ranchers Bees won promotion to the NPFL at the end of the 2025-26 season. The four clubs will now compete in the Nigerian top flight, while the teams remaining in the NNL will attempt to emulate their achievement during the upcoming campaign.
The previous season’s promotion winners will provide a fresh test of the pathway between the NNL and the NPFL, with the newly promoted quartet preparing to compete at the highest level of domestic football in Nigeria.
Details of the fixture schedule and other organisational arrangements for the 2026-27 season are expected to be sent to participating clubs before the 31 October opening date.
The NNL remains an important route into the NPFL for clubs across the country. Under the approved four-conference format, teams from the northern and southern regions will pursue promotion within their respective groups before the successful sides meet in the concluding mini-tournament.
With the start date now confirmed, clubs can begin final preparations for the campaign, while further information on fixtures and the remaining arrangements is awaited.
