Oluwatosin Demehin Eyes WAFCON Title Defence After Dream Debut Triumph

Nigeria defender Oluwatosin Demehin has reflected on the unforgettable experience of winning the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title in her debut appearance for Nigeria, describing the achievement as a major confidence booster that continues to inspire her performances.

The Galatasaray defender said lifting the trophy with the 10-time African champions remains one of the proudest moments of her career and has strengthened her belief in what can be achieved through hard work and teamwork.

“Winning the WAFCON title in my first tournament with the Super Falcons makes me feel truly special,” Demehin said. “It has given me tremendous confidence whenever I represent Nigeria, whether in a single match or a major tournament. That experience showed me the rewards of dedication and unity.”

She added that the success continues to fuel her determination to improve and contribute to the team’s ambitions as they prepare to defend their continental crown in Morocco.

“That victory motivates me to keep developing, support the team in every way possible, and fight alongside my teammates to retain our title.”

Since starring at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, Demehin has established herself as a key figure in Nigeria’s defence. She also played a pivotal role in the Super Falcons’ successful “Mission X” campaign that saw them reclaim the African title in Morocco.

Looking ahead to the expanded 16-team WAFCON tournament, Demehin expects a much tougher competition but believes the Super Falcons possess the quality and experience needed to emerge victorious once again.

“The competition will be more challenging because many African teams have improved significantly. We are determined to succeed, but we must remain disciplined in defence, control the midfield, and be clinical in front of goal.”

Meanwhile, the Super Falcons’ camp in Casablanca received another boost as AS Roma forward Omorinsola Babajide travelled to join the squad on Thursday evening, increasing the number of players in camp to 12. Her arrival followed that of newly signed Inter Milan Women midfielder Toni Payne, who linked up with the team earlier in the day.
