Portugal fans back Jorge Jesus and Cristiano Ronaldo during Denmark win

Portugal supporters showed their backing for both Jorge Jesus and Cristiano Ronaldo as the dispute between the Al Nassr manager and his captain spilled into the stands during a 4-2 victory over Denmark in the UEFA Nations League.

Portugal secured all three points at Parken in Copenhagen on Thursday, maintaining their perfect start to the competition under Jesus. But the match was also their first since a publicised disagreement between the manager and Ronaldo, who left the Portugal camp in Copenhagen on Wednesday evening.

Footage published by Bleacher Report showed some Portugal fans wearing shirts carrying the message “We love you Jesus” in English, signalling their support for the manager.

Other supporters displayed a message bearing Ronaldo’s name alongside a heart symbol, making clear that the captain also retained strong backing among the travelling fans.

The contrasting messages reflected the tension surrounding the Portugal team after the latest developments involving Jesus and Ronaldo at Al Nassr. Ronaldo, the Saudi club’s captain, departed the national-team camp before Thursday’s match.

Despite the off-field dispute, Portugal continued an impressive campaign. Their win over Denmark was their third in three matches, following victories against Wales and Norway. They have taken nine points from nine and remain unbeaten under Jesus.

Portugal will face Norway again on Sunday in the fourth round of the UEFA Nations League group stage. Victory would send Jesus’ side directly into the semi-finals, with qualification secured without needing to wait for the final two matches.

Jesus said before the Denmark game that he would give a full account of what had happened between himself and Ronaldo after the meeting with Norway. The manager is therefore expected to address the dispute in detail once Sunday’s match has ended.
