Rothen: Vinicius suspension has handed Diomande a Real Madrid opportunity

Jerome Rothen believes Vinicius Junior’s suspension has worked in Real Madrid’s favour by giving Yan Diomande the chance to establish himself and move ahead of the Brazil forward in Jose Mourinho’s plans.

The former Paris Saint-Germain and France star said Vinicius’ absence had become a “blessing in disguise”, with Diomande taking full advantage of the opportunity. The player has reclaimed the left-wing role and emerged as an influential part of the team, Rothen said in comments reported by Tribuna.

Diomande makes his case

Diomande is now receiving regular playing time and has gained Mourinho’s confidence after a difficult start to the season.

Rothen said the pressure associated with Diomande’s transfer fee had affected him, while there had also been some uncertainty over his role on the pitch. However, a sustained run on the left has allowed the player to show more of his qualities.

The former France international believes that position gives Diomande greater freedom. Mourinho has asked him to press opponents and track back to support the defence, while also encouraging him to carry the ball forward and move into central areas.

Those movements, Rothen said, help provide greater balance in midfield and make Diomande an important tactical component of the side.

Rothen highlights Real Madrid’s defensive work

Rothen also assessed the defensive contribution of Real Madrid’s attacking players, arguing that the team’s approach has changed from the period when Kylian Mbappe and Vinicius were contributing less without the ball.

He said Mbappe is now working harder defensively, while Diomande’s movement and tactical discipline are helping to give the team the balance it needs.

Asked whether Vinicius had lost his place in the starting line-up, Rothen agreed, although he stressed that Diomande must continue performing at his current level to retain it.

“For me, yes, Vinicius has lost his place,” Rothen said. “Diomande will have to defend his position, but even if he is slightly less talented technically, the work he does in terms of positioning and giving the team balance puts him two steps ahead of Vinicius.”

Rothen’s comparison therefore focuses on tactical responsibility and the overall contribution to the team rather than individual ability. He acknowledged that Vinicius remains the more gifted player technically, but believes Diomande’s work rate, positioning and discipline currently give him the advantage.

Real Madrid are listed to face AEK Athens in the Champions League on 04 November 2026. Their next listed La Liga fixture is against Valencia on 07 November 2026.
