FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup: Nigeria face Brazil in semi-final battle for historic final place

Nigeria’s Flamingos are one victory away from reaching the final of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup, but must overcome Brazil in Wednesday’s semi-final in Morocco.

Hakeem Busari’s side have recovered from a difficult start to the tournament and arrive at the last four having won four consecutive matches. Their progress has been built on resilience, as well as a growing belief within the squad.

Nigeria opened their campaign with a 2-1 defeat by Poland, leaving them with little margin for error in their remaining group fixtures. They responded with a hard-fought 2-0 win against Puerto Rico before producing their defining performance of the group stage against defending champions North Korea.

The Flamingos defeated North Korea 3-1 in a display of confidence, discipline and attacking quality. The result secured their place in the Round of 16 and gave the team renewed momentum for the knockout stages.

They then overcame Mexico 2-1 to reach the quarter-finals, where they faced Venezuela.

That match required patience, with chances missed by both sides and extra time appearing increasingly likely. Nigeria eventually found a breakthrough in the 89th minute when Azeezat Oduntan converted a penalty to seal a place in the semi-finals.

Brazil will present another demanding challenge, with Greise Kelly among the players Nigeria must contain. She has been one of the tournament’s leading performers in Morocco, scoring three goals and supplying five assists.

Nigeria will again rely on goalkeeper Jane Ijirigho, whose interventions have proved crucial during the knockout rounds. Her saves have helped the Flamingos remain in close contests and negotiate difficult periods on their route to the semi-finals.

Busari told FIFA.com that reaching the last four represented a significant personal and national achievement.

“Reaching the semi-finals is a dream come true for me and a great achievement. I’m looking forward to it because I want to make my country proud. We want to give our best in the next match and show everyone what we can do.”

Brazil’s attacking strength and experience at this stage of the competition will test Nigeria, but the Flamingos have steadily improved throughout the tournament. They know a strong performance from the opening whistle will be required if they are to take the final step towards the title match.

The semi-final will be played on Wednesday, 4 November, at the Mohammed VI Football Complex, Pitch 3, in Rabat, Morocco. Kick-off is scheduled for 6pm Morocco time, which is 7pm in Nigeria.
