Sam Sodje urges Super Falcons fans to stay behind Nigeria after Malawi defeat

Former Super Eagles defender Sam Sodje has urged Nigerian supporters to back the Super Falcons after their shock defeat by WAFCON debutants Malawi, saying the team needs encouragement rather than increased criticism.

Nigeria, the ten-time African champions, suffered a disappointing loss that prompted a negative reaction from some fans. However, Sodje believes supporters should focus on helping the players recover their confidence as the tournament continues, rather than judging the team on a single result.

“Losing to Malawi, who are debutants, should not be something we as fans should criticize for now. Instead, we should cheer them up to play better and carry on in the tournament,” Sodje told Brila.net.

The former Nigeria defender said the way a team responds to a setback can have a significant influence on its performances in the matches that follow. He also suggested that players can benefit from pressure when it is accompanied by support and belief from those around them.

“Football depends on how we respond and players tend to play better under pressure.”

Sodje called for patience from supporters while the Super Falcons attempt to revive their campaign. He warned that sustained criticism so early in the competition could make it more difficult for the players to regain momentum.

“We are in a competition, so all the criticism should be left behind. The players know they have to bounce back and I’m sure they will bounce back.”

Despite the defeat, Sodje remains confident in the ability of the Nigerian squad to respond positively when they return to action. He pointed to the quality and experience available within the team, backing the players to show the character required to recover from their disappointing start.

Nigeria has long been one of the leading forces in African women’s football. The Super Falcons’ record as ten-time African champions underlines their status as continental giants, and Sodje believes they can rediscover the form that has established that reputation.

With the tournament still in its early stages, the former international said unity between the players and their supporters could be important to Nigeria’s prospects. He believes a collective effort can help the team overcome the disappointment against Malawi and continue pursuing its objectives in the competition.
