Senegal coaching search stalls as political rifts delay decision between Patrick Vieira and Herve Renard

Senegal’s bid to appoint a new national team coach has been plunged into uncertainty, with political tensions at the highest levels of government holding up a decision between leading candidates Patrick Vieira and Herve Renard.
The fallout comes in the wake of Senegal’s elimination in the last 16 of the 2026 World Cup, where the “Lions of Teranga” were beaten 3-2 by Belgium. The result has effectively brought the tenure of current head coach Pape Thiaw to an end, although his departure has yet to be made official.
According to French newspaper L’Equipe, former Arsenal and France midfielder Vieira and French coach Renard are the two main contenders to replace Thiaw. However, the final call has been delayed amid internal disputes and political manoeuvring that stretch well beyond football and into Senegal’s governing elite.
Vieira emerges as federation favourite
Vieira, who was born in Dakar, is described as the frontrunner for the role. The 1998 World Cup winner has been out of work since leaving Italian side Genoa in November 2025 and is understood to command strong backing within the Senegalese Football Federation.
Key figures inside the federation are said to be impressed not only by his profile as a high‐level former player and experienced coach, but also by his long-standing ties to the country. Vieira has Senegalese roots and has previously invested in the “Diambars” academy, one of Senegal’s most prominent player development centres.
Sources cited in the report indicate that talks with Vieira have progressed significantly. Negotiations are believed to have advanced to the point where Vieira has given a provisional green light to take charge of the national team, pending the resolution of administrative and political issues.
Renard’s African pedigree keeps him in contention
Renard remains a serious alternative, largely because of his track record on the African continent. The Frenchman guided Zambia to the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations title and repeated the feat with Cote d’Ivoire in 2015, becoming the only coach to win the competition with two different national teams.
Although his most recent spell in international management, with Tunisia at the World Cup, was brief, his name is still firmly on the shortlist for the Senegal job. His proven ability to build competitive sides in Africa keeps him in the frame as discussions continue.
Political tensions weigh on football decision
L’Equipe’s report suggests that the choice of Senegal’s next coach has become entangled in broader political struggles. The process is said to be influenced by ongoing tensions between President Bassirou Diomaye Faye and former prime minister Ousmane Sonko within the ruling “PASTEF” party.
These internal divisions have reportedly had a knock-on effect on the decision-making of the Senegalese Football Federation, with appointments and strategic choices in football increasingly viewed through a political lens.
No announcement before Thiaw exit is finalised
As it stands, no official announcement has been made regarding either Thiaw’s dismissal or the identity of his successor. The federation is waiting to complete the formal procedures required to terminate Thiaw’s contract before moving forward.
Any appointment must also receive approval from the Ministry of Sports, adding another layer of bureaucracy to an already complicated process.
Only once Thiaw’s situation is fully resolved and the government has signed off on the choice will the federation be able to confirm whether Vieira or Renard – or potentially another candidate – will lead Senegal into their next cycle.
The incoming coach will be tasked with preparing the team for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations and the qualifiers for the 2030 World Cup, amid expectations that Senegal should remain one of the dominant forces in African football despite their early exit from the 2026 tournament.
