Sporting Lagos and Ikorodu City set for historic NPFL derby

Sporting Lagos and Ikorodu City will meet for the first time in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) when the two Lagos clubs face one another on Matchday 2 of the 2026/27 season.

The fixture is set to become the first top-flight meeting between the South-West rivals and is already one of the most anticipated games of the opening stages of the new campaign. The encounter will add another chapter to the region’s growing football rivalry, particularly following the relegation of Remo Stars to the Nigeria National League (NNL).

Although Sporting Lagos and Ikorodu City have crossed paths previously, they have never contested an NPFL match. Their historic meeting is therefore expected to attract significant attention when the league season gets under way.

The NPFL will not begin until the final weekend of August, but the release of the 2026/27 fixture list has already shifted focus towards the opening rounds, Soccernet.ng reports.

Before the derby takes place, several high-profile fixtures will headline Matchday One.

Defending champions Rangers International will start their title defence at home against Katsina United. The champions will be expected to make a strong beginning to their campaign, although Katsina United will provide the opposition in the first test of Rangers International’s bid to retain the league title.

Former champions Enyimba will begin the season away from home, travelling to Minna to face Niger Tornadoes in what promises to be a difficult opening fixture.

Kwara United have been drawn against four-time league winners Kano Pillars in one of the standout games of the first matchday. Kano Pillars’ visit provides another demanding contest among the fixtures scheduled for the opening weekend.

Rivers United will host Plateau United in Port Harcourt, while Shooting Stars will welcome Inter Lagos to Ibadan for another South-West encounter.

Sporting Lagos will begin their own campaign away from home against Doma United, before turning their attention to the historic meeting with Ikorodu City in the following round.

Newly promoted Ikorodu City, meanwhile, will open their elite-division campaign at home in Lagos against Ranchers Bees. The club will be aiming to build on its promotion by making an early impression in the top flight.

The publication of the fixture list has increased expectation ahead of the new season, with clubs now expected to step up preparations for the campaign.

The 2026/27 NPFL season is scheduled to begin between 28 and 30 August. Fans can also receive sports news first by joining the publication’s WhatsApp channel.
