Taiwo Awoniyi named PFA Community champion for 2024/25 Season

By Monsurah Olatunji

Nottingham Forest striker and Super Eagles forward Taiwo Awoniyi has been named the club’s PFA Community Champion for the 2024/25 season, recognising his outstanding contributions to the local community off the pitch.

The award, presented by the Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA), honors players who show exceptional commitment to charitable causes and community engagement throughout the football season.

Despite an injury-plagued campaign that limited his appearances on the field, Awoniyi remained a constant presence in the Nottingham community.

His efforts included surprise visits to Premier League Kicks sessions, which were featured on Match of the Day, as well as the personal funding and hosting of a community Iftar during Ramadan.

One of his most widely praised initiatives was organizing an inclusive meal that brought together Christian and Muslim residents—an act that earned him admiration across diverse communities for promoting unity and cultural understanding.

“This award is not just about what happens on the pitch. It’s about how players use their platform to positively impact lives, and Taiwo has done just that,” a club representative said.

Awoniyi becomes the first Nigerian footballer to receive the PFA Community Champion award—an achievement that cements his reputation as both a role model and a community leader.

His recognition reflects a growing emphasis within football on social responsibility, as clubs and players deepen their involvement in the lives of the communities they represent.
