Victor Boniface explains new ‘punishable’ celebration in Leverkusen win
By: Monsurah Olatunji
Nigeria forward Victor Boniface may have scored a brace and provided an assist for Bayer Leverkusen to win 4-1 at Hoffenheim, but his goal celebration may well have landed him in another trouble.
Recalled that the 23-year-old was recently fined and handed a one-match ban following an offensive middle finger gesture in the German Super Cup to usher in the new season.
The Super Eagles star is at it again after finding the back of the net. He dropped his shorts to reveal his briefs and made an obscene gesture at the home fans to celebrate his opening goal.
However, he has since explained the reason behind his unusual celebration as fans called for another punishment.
“I didn’t want to provoke anyone, I did it in front of our fans,” Boniface clarified after the game.
“It’s a TikTok trend from a big influencer in Nigeria. I promised him I would celebrate like that, I just hadn’t scored yet!”
He then took to his social media page to post the picture accompanied by a sarcastic caption that reads; “I go soon stop to dey post memes or catch cruise sef e con dey be like say na only me no take my life serious this year.”
The win will be a confidence boost for Xavi Alonso’s men Leverkusen, who start their Champions League campaign next Tuesday in Rotterdam against Feyenoord.
