Yira Sor set to leave Genk for Turkish club Amedspor

Nigeria international winger Yira Sor is close to joining Turkish side Amedspor from Belgian top-flight club Genk and is already in Turkey completing the final details of the move.

Sor will not be available for Genk’s league opener against Zulte Waregem this weekend, with the 25-year-old understood to have been absent from the club in recent days while negotiations are completed.

Genk confirmed that the transfer is nearing completion, although coach Jess Thorup said he could not yet confirm whether all the necessary documents had been signed and processed.

“I don’t know if everything has been signed yet, but I can be honest enough to say that Yira hasn’t been at the club for the past two days. He won’t be there,” Thorup told Het Laatste Nieuws.

Sor’s expected move to Amedspor follows a period of uncertainty over his future at Genk. His absence from training had already suggested that he was preparing to leave the Belgian club, where he has played since joining from Czech side Slavia Prague in 2022.

Before moving to Slavia Prague, Sor also featured for Czech club Banik Ostrava. During his time in Belgium, he became known for his blistering pace and made 92 appearances for Genk, starting 34 of those matches.

The Nigeria international scored 14 goals and supplied seven assists during his spell with the club. He has been capped at senior level by Nigeria and is regarded as another attacking option for Amedspor as they continue to strengthen their squad.

Amedspor have recently signed another Nigeria forward, Gift Orban, meaning Sor could soon join a fellow Super Eagles player at the Turkish club.

However, the transfer has not yet been officially completed, with Thorup’s comments indicating that the final paperwork remains outstanding. The Genk manager has nevertheless made clear that Sor is no longer being considered for the club’s opening league fixture against Zulte Waregem.

Sor’s departure would bring an end to his time at Genk after three years in Belgium. His record of 14 goals and seven assists in 92 appearances reflects the contribution he made to the club, while his pace was a consistent feature of his performances.

Amedspor are expected to complete the move once the remaining formalities have been concluded. Until then, Genk have confirmed only that Sor is in Turkey working towards finalising the transfer and will miss their first league match of the campaign.
