2024 FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup: Nigeria and Ecuador take charge of Group A

Nigeria and Ecuador secured victories in their opening matches of the 2024 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in the Dominican Republic.

The Flamingos defeated New Zealand 4-1 in the first match thanks to goals from Shakirat Moshood, Taiwo Adegoke, Faridat Abdulwahab, and Taiwo Afolabi.

Shakirat broke the deadlock in the second minute before Taiwo Adegoke in the 13th minutes.

Faridat Abdulwahab made it 3-0 for Bankole Olowookere’s side while captain, Taiwo Afolabi headed home the fourth.

Hannah Saxon pulled a goal back for New Zealand at the hour mark after Nigeria failed to defend a corner kick.

The win pushed the 2022 bronze medalist to the top of Group A ahead of Ecuador, which beat host Dominican Republic 2-0.

A brace from Jaslym Valverde ensured a winning start for La Tricolor.

Nigeria and Ecuador will face off in the next group match on October 19, 2024.
