Nasarawa Amazons become fourth different winner of Betsy Obaseki Cup

By Oyediji Oluwaseun Babatunde

Nasarawa Amazons clinched the 2024 Betsy Obaseki Women’s Football Tournament (BOWFT) title on Wednesday, marking their triumph in a thrilling final that saw them defeat Bayelsa Queens in a dramatic penalty shootout.

After a tense 0-0 draw in regulation time, the match went into penalties, and after both sides were tied 4-4 following the first five kicks, the game moved into sudden death.

It was in the final round of penalties that the Solid Miners emerged victorious, securing a 6-5 win and their first BOWFT title.

This victory for Nasarawa Amazons continues the trend of different champions in each edition of the tournament, with Bayelsa Queens having won the maiden edition in 2021, followed by FC Robo Queens in 2022.

Edo Queens won the trophy in 2023 but had to settle for the bronze medal this time around.

In the third-place match, Edo Queens defeated Heartland Queens 4-2, cementing their position as the third-best team in the tournament.

With this latest success, Nasarawa Amazons continue to solidify their reputation as one of Nigeria’s premier women’s football teams.
