Ahead of the 2024 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in the Dominican Republic, Nigeria’s U-17 women’s national team, the Flamingos, received a significant morale boost this week.

The West African team was visited by members of the Association of Nigerian Citizens in the Dominican Republic, who offered words of encouragement and support.

The delegation, led by President Victor Nze and Vice President Dr. Elijah Ogunsola, visited the team in Santiago, further strengthening the connection between the Flamingos and the Nigerian community in the host country.

Nigeria, in Group A, will face the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, and New Zealand in the tournament. Bankole Olowookere’s side is set to kick off their campaign against New Zealand on October 16, 2024.

After finishing in third place at the 2022 U-17 Women’s World Cup in India, the Flamingos are eager to go one step further and reach the final. Their ultimate goal is to secure Nigeria’s first global title in women’s football.

This would be a remarkable achievement for the team, especially as their U-20 counterparts, who reached the World Cup final twice, were unable to secure a title, losing to Germany in both instances and bowing out in the Round of 16 this year.

This tournament will be the eighth edition of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup, and the Flamingos are determined to make history.
