Super Falcons Legend Onome Ebi Hails Ashleigh Plumptre as Her Ideal Successor

By Oyediji Oluwaseun Babatunde

Veteran Nigerian defender Onome Ebi has expressed admiration for Ashleigh Plumptre, describing her as a worthy successor in the heart of the Super Falcons’ defense.

Ebi, who famously wore the number 5 jersey throughout her illustrious career with Nigeria, highlighted the symbolic passing of the torch to Plumptre—who now dons the same number for the nine-time African champions.

Plumptre has been one of the standout performers at the ongoing Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco, anchoring a solid defense that has recorded four consecutive clean sheets.

In a heartfelt post on her social media, Ebi pointed out uncanny similarities between herself and the younger defender:

“You see this girl, eh? I feel we are the same but different parents. Best replacement for the number 5 shirt, which means a lot to me and makes me satisfied after 20 years,” Ebi wrote.

“We share the same birthday ‘8’, same birth month ‘5’, but different birth year. And now you just have to change the name on the jersey from Ebi to Plumptre 5.”

“Discipline, dedication, energy, commitment, and a fight so similar — I am so proud.”

Now playing for Al Ittihad, Plumptre is expected to play a crucial role in Justine Madugu’s squad as they prepare for a high-stakes semi-final clash against defending champions South Africa on Tuesday.

The Super Falcons are determined to reclaim the WAFCON title with their “Mission X” campaign — a drive toward an unprecedented 10th championship.
