Lyle Foster: Pressure is on Nigeria ahead of World Cup Qualifier

South Africa striker Lyle Foster believes the weight of expectation lies firmly on Nigeria as South Africa prepare for Tuesday night’s crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier at the Free State Stadium in Bloemfontein.
Foster, who recently celebrated his birthday, says the perfect gift would be three points against the Super Eagles — a result that would keep South Africa in command of Group C.
“I don’t necessarily think there’s pressure on us. At the moment, we are where we want to be in the group and that’s a positive. The pressure is on the teams chasing us, but that doesn’t mean we can relax.” Foster said.
South Africa head into the encounter in buoyant mood following a 3-0 victory over Lesotho on Friday, while Nigeria managed a narrow 1-0 win against Rwanda in Uyo a day later.
The Burnley forward emphasised the importance of consistency as Bafana Bafana close in on a potential World Cup ticket.
“We must keep the same mentality, stay humble, take each game as it comes, and keep our focus.”
With 16 points from seven matches, South Africa currently lead Group C, while Nigeria sit in third place with 10 points.
A win on Tuesday could put Bafana Bafana within touching distance of qualification, while anything less than victory for the Super Eagles would deal a significant blow to their hopes.
