Morocco Dismisses WAFCON Hosting Doubts, Insists Preparations Are on Track

Morocco has firmly rejected reports suggesting it could relinquish hosting rights for the upcoming Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), stressing that preparations for the tournament are progressing as planned.

The continental women’s championship is scheduled to kick off on March 17, but speculation has circulated in recent weeks that the event might be moved to another country. The rumours emerged in the wake of controversy surrounding last month’s Africa Cup of Nations final, which sparked debate over Morocco’s continued role as a host of major CAF tournaments.

The claims gathered momentum after comments attributed to South Africa’s deputy minister of sport during the Hollywoodbets Super League Awards, where South Africa was mentioned as a possible alternative host should Morocco step aside.

However, those suggestions were later played down by South Africa’s Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, Gayton McKenzie, who publicly distanced the government from any indication that South Africa was preparing to replace Morocco as host.

Reaffirming Morocco’s stance, a source close to the inner circles of the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) told Sports Village Square that the country remains fully committed to hosting WAFCON as scheduled. The source confirmed that there has been no official communication from the Confederation of African Football (CAF) regarding a change of venue and that all organisational and logistical plans are continuing without disruption.

With less than a month to the start of the tournament, Morocco has dismissed the speculation as unfounded, reiterating its readiness to stage Africa’s premier women’s football competition and deliver a successful WAFCON.
