Maduka Okoye Makes History as First Nigerian Goalkeeper in 11 Years to Record 10 Clean Sheets in Europe’s Top Five Leagues

Nigeria goalkeeper Maduka Okoye became the first Nigerian in over a decade to achieve 10 clean sheets in a single season across Europe’s top five leagues, following Udinese Calcio’s 2-0 Serie A victory over Cagliari Calcio on Saturday.

The milestone surpasses a long-standing record set by former Nigerian international Vincent Enyeama, who kept 17 clean sheets for Lille OSC during the 2014/15 Ligue 1 campaign.

Okoye delivered another commanding performance at the Unipol Domus, making three crucial saves to preserve his side’s clean sheet and lay the groundwork for Udinese’s win.

The 26-year-old was particularly impressive in the first half, producing a brilliant fingertip save to keep Cagliari at bay before Udinese eventually took control of the game.

Adam Buksa broke the deadlock in the 56th minute, with Idrissa Gueye sealing the victory deep into stoppage time, securing all three points for the visitors.

The win lifted Udinese to ninth place in Serie A, strengthening the club’s hopes of finishing in the top half this season.

For Okoye, the clean sheet also matches his personal best of 10 shutouts, first achieved during the 2020/21 season with Sparta Rotterdam in the Eredivisie. Achieving the same feat in Serie A — widely regarded as one of Europe’s most tactically demanding leagues — highlights the Nigerian’s remarkable growth and consistency.

After a challenging spell at Watford FC, where opportunities were limited, Okoye has rebuilt both his confidence and reputation since joining Udinese in 2022. His commanding presence, shot-stopping prowess, and composure have cemented him as one of the standout goalkeepers in Italy’s top flight this season.

Okoye’s impressive form has reportedly drawn interest from top European clubs ahead of the summer transfer window, with Inter Milan, AC Milan, and AFC Bournemouth among the suitors. His continued excellence is also expected to solidify his position as Nigeria’s first-choice goalkeeper for upcoming international competitions and World Cup qualifiers.
