Postecoglou suffers surprise defeat in first match as Al Nassr boss

Ange Postecoglou’s reign at Al Nassr has begun with an unexpected setback, as the Saudi champions fell 2-1 to Benfica’s reserve side in a behind-closed-doors friendly in Lisbon.

The newly appointed Australian manager took charge of the Riyadh club for the first time on Wednesday, only to see his team surrender an early lead against the Portuguese giants’ B team during their pre-season training camp.

Early lead slips away

Al Nassr struck almost immediately, with Abdelmalek Al Jaber opening the scoring in the fourth minute. The early breakthrough appeared to set the tone for a positive start under Postecoglou.

But the Saudi Pro League holders conceded twice afterwards, allowing Benfica’s reserves to overturn the deficit and hand “Al Alamiyy” (The Global Club) a narrow defeat in their first outing of the Portuguese camp.

The match was played without spectators and media, as is common for early pre-season fixtures, but the result will nonetheless raise questions as Postecoglou begins reshaping a squad expected to challenge on multiple fronts next season.

New era after Jesus departure

The game marked Postecoglou’s first on the touchline for Al Nassr since succeeding Portuguese coach Jorge Jesus, who left at the end of last season after guiding the club to the Saudi league title – their first in seven years.

The appointment of the former Celtic, Tottenham and Australia coach is seen as a statement move by the Riyadh side, who are aiming to consolidate domestic dominance and reassert themselves in Asian competition.

In this opening friendly, Postecoglou opted to use the occasion to assess his wider squad rather than lean on established stars, with several key internationals still missing following their participation with national teams at the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

The Australian “was keen to test many backup and young players”, local reports said, underlining that the result is likely to be viewed in the context of experimentation and conditioning rather than as a definitive early verdict on his tenure.

Pre-season schedule in Portugal

Al Nassr are currently based in Lisbon for their summer training camp, where fitness work and tactical sessions under the new manager are being blended with a series of warm-up matches.

Their next friendly will be against Spanish side Merida on 28 July, followed by a game against Portuguese club Estrela Amadora on 1 August. The camp will conclude with a final test against Spain’s Almeria on 4 August.

These fixtures are expected to feature a gradual reintegration of the club’s international contingent, giving Postecoglou a clearer picture of his strongest line-up ahead of the new campaign.

Domestic defence and Asian return

Al Nassr head into the coming season as defending champions of the Saudi Pro League, a title they secured last term under Jesus after a seven-year drought.

Postecoglou’s primary task will be to retain that crown in an increasingly competitive domestic landscape, with several rival clubs having invested heavily in new signings and high-profile managers.

The club will also return to the AFC Champions League Elite – Asia’s top-tier club competition – having been absent from it last season. Instead, they competed in the secondary continental tournament, where they advanced all the way to the final before losing to Japan’s Gamba Osaka.

A deeper run in the premier Asian competition, coupled with a successful title defence at home, will be the benchmarks by which Postecoglou’s first season is judged.

While a pre-season defeat to Benfica’s reserves is unlikely to define his spell in Riyadh, it offers an early reminder of the work ahead as Al Nassr transition into a new era under their Australian coach.
