Nabil Fekir joins Abha on free transfer in Saudi Pro League move
Former France international Nabil Fekir has joined newly promoted Abha Club on a free transfer, becoming the latest high-profile arrival in the Roshn Saudi League during the summer transfer window.
Abha announced the signing of the 33-year-old French midfielder in a video published by the club. He arrives after leaving Al Jazira Club in the United Arab Emirates, where his contract ended following the conclusion of last season.
The Saudi club did not disclose the terms of the agreement. However, previous media reports stated that Fekir would sign a one-year contract, with an option to extend the deal for a further season.
Fekir represents a significant addition for Abha as they prepare for life in the Roshn Saudi League. He was part of the France squad that won the 2018 Fifa World Cup in Russia, appearing in every match as a substitute. He did not score or provide an assist during the tournament.
The midfielder has built an extensive career in European football. He first established himself at Olympique Lyonnais, where he enjoyed a prominent spell between 2013 and 2019.
Fekir then moved to Real Betis, spending five years with the Spanish club before joining Al Jazira in 2024. His time in the UAE continued to produce strong individual performances, with the Frenchman featuring in 25 matches last season.
He scored 10 goals and supplied four assists for Al Jazira during that campaign.
The move to Abha means Fekir will now continue his career in Saudi Arabia without a transfer fee being paid for his services. His arrival is another statement signing for the club, which has recently earned promotion to the country’s top flight.
Fekir’s international career included 25 appearances for France, and he was part of the squad that lifted the World Cup under Didier Deschamps in 2018. Although he was used from the bench throughout the tournament, his selection reflected his status within the team that won the title in Russia.
At club level, he made his name with Olympique Lyonnais before becoming an important attacking player for Real Betis. His ability to contribute both goals and assists was also evident during his most recent season with Al Jazira.
Abha have not released further details about the financial arrangements or the renewal clause in Fekir’s contract. Reports indicate that the initial agreement will run for one season, with the possibility of extending it by another year.
