Liverpool can sign Ronald Araujo permanently for €55m after Barcelona loan
Liverpool will have the option to sign Ronald Araujo permanently from Barcelona for €55m after the Uruguay defender’s loan move to the Premier League club, according to sources familiar with the negotiations.
The agreement between the two clubs represents one of the biggest surprises of the summer transfer window. Araujo has been regarded as an important member of Barcelona’s defence in recent years, but he is now set to leave the Catalan club and begin a new spell at Liverpool.
The defender is scheduled to depart Barcelona today before completing his move to Anfield. He will join Liverpool on loan for the season, with the English club given the right to decide whether to make the transfer permanent at the end of the campaign.
The initial announcement of the deal did not include a figure for the purchase option. However, Mundo Deportivo reports that Liverpool would have to pay Barcelona €55m if it chooses to retain Araujo permanently.
That arrangement means the move is not necessarily limited to a one-season loan. Liverpool can assess the defender’s performances during the campaign before deciding whether to activate the clause and complete a permanent transfer.
Araujo’s departure is particularly notable because of his previous standing at Barcelona. The Uruguay international had been viewed as one of the club’s key defensive players over the past few years, making his temporary move to Liverpool an unexpected development in the summer market.
His switch to Anfield follows an agreement that gives Liverpool control over the next stage of his future. The club can wait until the end of the season before making a final decision, with the player’s level of performance and the confidence of the coaching staff and management expected to shape that judgement.
Araujo’s move also comes after he fell outside Barcelona’s plans for involvement with the team in the Udine tournament. He is therefore set to leave the club and take on a new challenge in English football.
For Liverpool, the loan provides an opportunity to evaluate the defender before committing to a major financial outlay. If Araujo establishes himself in the team and convinces the club’s management that he should stay, Liverpool can complete the deal by paying the €55m clause to Barcelona.
If the option is not taken up, the arrangement will remain a loan for the season rather than becoming a permanent transfer. The final outcome will therefore depend on Araujo’s performances at Liverpool and the decision reached by the English club at the end of the campaign.
