Real Madrid consider five midfield options after Rodri transfer blow
Real Madrid are having to reassess their midfield plans after negotiations for Rodri dramatically changed direction, with the Ballon d’Or winner now reportedly close to signing for Barcelona. Rodri had been one of the players included in Enrique Riquelme’s programme during his campaign to become the club’s president.
The Spanish club must now find an alternative as they attempt to fill the significant gap left by the departures of Toni Kroos and Luka Modric. Their priority is to recruit a midfielder capable of controlling the tempo, helping to build attacks and eventually taking a leading role in the centre of the team.
Speaking on the programme El Larguero, journalist Jose David Lopez acknowledged that replacing Rodri would be extremely difficult because he is the best defensive midfielder in the world. However, Lopez identified five players who could offer Real Madrid different solutions, either immediately or as longer-term investments.
The first name on his list is England midfielder Adam Wharton, the 22-year-old Crystal Palace player. Lopez believes Wharton is the closest to Rodri in terms of his qualities and style.
“He is very calm on the ball, has excellent anticipation, keeps his composure under pressure and his style of play resembles Rodri’s in many ways,” Lopez said.
Wharton’s performances have attracted the attention of leading clubs in the Premier League, but Lopez considers him the most natural stylistic replacement among the five candidates.
The second option is France Under-? No, French prospect Ayoub Bouaddi, who is only 18. Lopez views Bouaddi as an ideal player for the position because of his composure, decision-making and ability to break through defensive lines with his dribbling.
His estimated market value has risen to about 80m euros, but the teenager is regarded as an investment for the future. Lopez believes Bouaddi could develop into Real Madrid’s midfield anchor for many years.
Experience and immediate solutions
For a more immediate and ready-made answer, Lopez highlighted Portugal international Ruben Neves, aged 29. Neves offers extensive experience, proven quality in distributing the ball and leadership skills.
“He has always attracted interest from European clubs, and with his experience and leadership qualities he would be extremely useful now. He is one of the players best equipped to lead Real Madrid’s build-up from the beginning,” Lopez said.
The proposal involving Denmark midfielder Pierre-Emile Højbjerg, 31, is based on different strengths. Rather than offering the same potential for development as Bouaddi, Højbjerg would provide physical power, tactical discipline and the ability to cover ground across the pitch.
Although he does not have the same room for long-term growth, his seriousness and balance could meet Real Madrid’s immediate needs. A potential cost of no more than 15m euros, and possibly less, would also make him an attractive option financially.
The final name, and Lopez’s most likely choice if Real Madrid want to move quickly, is Turkiye midfielder Hakan Calhanoglu. Lopez described him as the best option if the decision had to be made tomorrow while staying within budget.
“I have always thought of him since Modric left. He has never stopped improving. If I had to sign someone tomorrow, I would choose him,” Lopez said.
Calhanoglu is valued for his intelligence, composure under pressure and ability to accelerate play with very few touches. He also offers a significant threat from set pieces, including free-kicks and penalties.
