Barcelona teenager Jordi Bescos earns surprise first-team chance under Hansi Flick
Barcelona teenager Jordi Bescos has been handed an unexpected opportunity to impress Hansi Flick during the club’s pre-season preparations, with the 17-year-old emerging from the youth set-up as a potential first-team option.
According to Spanish newspaper Sport, Flick’s decision to call up Bescos came as “a pleasant bombshell” for the young defender. The player had not expected such a significant step in his career, particularly because he had spent only the final months of last season with Juvenil A and had not yet appeared for Barca Atletic, Barcelona’s reserve side.
Bescos’s promotion has been helped by a number of circumstances within the squad. Alejandro Balde has recovered from injury but is still working towards his best form, while Barcelona have yet to complete a deal for Joao Cancelo or Jorge Salinas. The departure of Jofre Torrents to Ajax has also left further space around the left-back position.
The original expectation was for Bescos to return to the reserve team after pre-season. However, his performances in training and friendly matches have reportedly encouraged Flick to reconsider that plan, raising the possibility that the defender could remain with the senior squad for longer.
A composed first start
Bescos has already fulfilled his ambition of playing for Barcelona, albeit in friendly matches, and has done so without appearing overwhelmed by the demands of an unexpected opportunity.
Last Saturday, he made his first start for the club during a triangular tournament at the stadium in Udine. The match provided a demanding examination, particularly because he was asked to deal with Nottingham Forest winger Ola Aina, a player known for his pace and dangerous dribbling on the flank.
The teenager responded with notable maturity. Rather than rushing into challenges or allowing himself to be drawn into unwanted one-on-one situations, Bescos remained patient and maintained the correct distance from his opponent. He also dealt intelligently with difficult moments when they arose.
That performance strengthened the impression that his progress has not simply been the result of injuries and departures creating an opening. Bescos appears to have taken advantage of the opportunity with an assured approach that has caught the attention of Barcelona’s coaching staff.
Flick showing faith
The left-back position is currently open enough for Bescos to make a genuine case for himself. If he continues to develop steadily and avoids trying to force his progress, the teenager could make important advances in his career at Barcelona.
Flick is already monitoring the defender closely. The German manager is known for demanding high standards, but he also appreciates the quality produced by La Masia and has shown a willingness to trust young players from the academy.
Bescos has been given opportunities in successive matches, a sign that Flick sees promise in his ability rather than treating his involvement as a one-off response to squad problems. The manager’s confidence has given the teenager an important platform at a time when Barcelona are assessing their options at left-back.
