Allegri faces possible extended ban after red card in Napoli’s 3-3 draw with Roma

Napoli manager Massimiliano Allegri was sent off during his side’s dramatic 3-3 draw with Roma and could now face a suspension of more than one match after his angry reaction.

Allegri insisted he had done nothing to warrant a red card, but members of his coaching staff had to restrain him as he attempted to confront the officials following Leonardo Balerdi’s equalising goal.

The goal made it 3-3 after a VAR review, with referee Andrea Colombo confirming the decision. Napoli had appealed for a foul by Balerdi on Sam Beukema during the build-up.

Although there had been contact between the two players, it occurred before the goal was scored. Beukema had initially got back to his feet and rejoined the attack, only to fall again and clutch his ribs after the goal had gone in.

DAZN touchline reporter Davide Bernardi said Allegri told fourth official Juan Luca Sacchi: “If you don’t disallow this goal…”

The VAR review ended without Colombo being called to the monitor. Allegri then began to move away from the technical area, but Sacchi alerted the referee, who showed the Napoli manager a straight red card.

“What did I say? Tell me what I said? No, no!” Allegri shouted.

He removed his jacket and appeared ready to throw it, although he kept hold of it, unlike on previous occasions. The coach then walked away angrily before turning back towards the pitch and the fourth official.

Napoli staff tried repeatedly to hold him back and prevent him from advancing further. The incident means Allegri will definitely miss Napoli’s next match against Monza, scheduled for midweek, while his conduct after being dismissed could lead to a longer suspension.

Roma are due to face Cagliari in Serie A on 27 October 2026. Monza will then host Napoli in Serie A on 28 October 2026.
