Steve McManaman backs Real Madrid to beat Barcelona 3-1 in El Clasico

Steve McManaman expects Real Madrid to defeat Barcelona 3-1 in Sunday’s El Clasico at Spotify Camp Nou.

The former Real Madrid player made his prediction during an interview with 365Scores, with his comments published by SPORT. However, McManaman acknowledged that the fixture regularly defies expectations.

“I expect Real Madrid to win 3-1, but let’s see what happens. This match is always beyond prediction,” he said.

McManaman believes the contest will be particularly demanding because both sides have the quality to decide important matches. He said the outcome could be determined by fine margins, including how effectively each team takes its chances and how it responds to pressure during the decisive moments.

The absence of Vinicius Junior could, in his view, have a significant effect on Real Madrid’s attacking threat. McManaman highlighted the Brazil forward’s pace and ability to beat defenders in one-on-one situations, arguing that those qualities allow him to change the course of a match.

He also rejected the idea that Kylian Mbappe could simply replace everything Vinicius Junior provides by taking his place in the side.

“Mbappe has great ability, of course, but they are completely different players. You cannot replace everything Vinicius brings simply by putting another player in his position,” McManaman said.

That leaves Jose Mourinho with the task of finding the right tactical solution, according to McManaman, who said the Real Madrid manager must ensure his team remains dangerous in attack despite the Brazilian’s absence.

Mbappe preferred to Lamine Yamal

McManaman also selected Mbappe ahead of Barcelona forward Lamine Yamal in the race for the Ballon d’Or.

“I would choose Mbappe. He is a player who can make the difference and score goals in the biggest matches, while he also has enough experience to help him deal with pressure,” he said.

The former Real Madrid player praised Yamal’s performances but maintained his preference for Mbappe when asked to choose between the two players at present.

“Yamal is an extremely talented player and has produced a high level of performance despite his young age. But if I had to choose between the two now, I would vote for Mbappe,” McManaman added.

His comments underline the contrasting qualities he sees in the two forwards: Yamal’s impact despite his youth and Mbappe’s experience, decisive finishing and ability to perform in major fixtures. Despite recognising the Barcelona player’s development, McManaman believes Mbappe remains the stronger choice for the individual award.
