Eric Chelle faces Nigeria selection dilemma as Super Eagles and Olympic Eagles clash

Nigeria coach Eric Chelle must decide how to manage two national teams scheduled to play in different countries on the same dates, with the Super Eagles and Olympic Eagles both involved in important qualifiers on 13 and 17 November.

The Super Eagles are due to host Tanzania in Uyo on 13 November before travelling to Dar es Salaam for the return fixture on 17 November in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying competition. The Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) fixtures were reported by Afrik-Foot on 25 October.

On those same dates, Nigeria’s U23 team, known as the Olympic Eagles, will face DR Congo in a U23 AFCON qualifier. The opening match is scheduled for Friday, 13 November, at TP Mazembe Stadium in Lubumbashi, with the second leg taking place on Tuesday, 17 November, at Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne.

The NFF’s communications department has confirmed that the U23 matches fall within the same international window as the senior team’s fixtures. However, the federation has not announced which coach will take charge of either side.

Super Eagles under pressure in Group L

Nigeria currently have three points in Group L, three behind leaders Guinea-Bissau. The Super Eagles began their campaign with a 2-1 victory against Madagascar but then lost 3-0 in Bissau.

Tanzania have one point in the group and have already secured qualification as co-hosts. Nigeria’s route to the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations has been described by Soccernet as running through Tanzania.

The conflicting schedule creates a practical problem for Chelle. The two matches on 13 November are being played in separate countries, making it impossible for the head coach to be on both touchlines. The same issue will arise when the fixtures are played again on 17 November.

The senior team’s matches carry the more immediate pressure. Nigeria are three points behind Guinea-Bissau, and failing to beat Tanzania at home would make their position in the group more difficult to recover.

If Chelle remains with the Super Eagles for both fixtures, an assistant or caretaker coach would have to lead the Olympic Eagles. Should he instead travel with the U23 side on either date, the senior team would play without its head coach.

The NFF has retained Uyo as the Super Eagles’ home venue for now. It must name both squads and confirm the coaching arrangements before the first matches take place on 13 November.
