Spalletti urges Juventus fans to end ‘toxic’ atmosphere after Napoli win

Luciano Spalletti has called on Juventus supporters to stand behind the team rather than turn the Allianz Stadium into a “toxic” environment after their 2-0 victory over Napoli.

The win eased some of the pressure on Juventus following a poor run of results, including a humiliating 2-0 defeat by relegation-threatened Genoa. But tension had been building before Sunday’s home match, with fans protesting outside the stadium and directing abuse at the players from the opening whistle.

Despite the hostile mood, Juventus secured an important victory. Juan Cabal struck the post early on, while Guglielmo Vicario produced an excellent save to deny Lorenzo Lucca.

The decisive moment came when Napoli’s Luca Marianucci was shown a second yellow card, leaving the visitors to play the remainder of the match with 10 men.

Juventus made full use of their numerical advantage. Long-range efforts from Karem Alajbegovic and Jeremy Boga settled the contest, prompting emotional celebrations on the touchline as Spalletti embraced members of his coaching staff at the final whistle.

Speaking to DAZN Italia after the match, Spalletti praised the commitment of his players and staff.

“They suffer as I do and work from morning until night. I am the first to arrive and the last to leave, but they are usually with me for most of the time,” he said. “However, the credit against Napoli belongs to the team.”

He added: “They managed to gather their strength and find the desire to take the first step, move forward and think positively. Then they managed to do that in the second half with some adjustments.

“I think they thoroughly deserved the win, and it restored some of their confidence in the football they play.”

Spalletti acknowledged that Juventus’ recent decline had affected the team’s mentality, with a loss of confidence capable of spreading throughout a struggling squad.

“All we can do is stand by them, but some players really do slip into this spiral and lose confidence in everything they do, even the simplest things,” he said.

“When a simple pass goes wrong or there is hesitation in making a decision – which is worse than making the wrong decision – that lack of confidence spreads to the rest of the team.”

Juventus must now use the victory as a platform to rebuild their season and repair their strained relationship with their supporters. With the squad short of numbers, Spalletti warned that an antagonistic stadium atmosphere would make progress more difficult.

“We simply have to keep moving forward,” he said. “This is a moment we have to deal with, and afterwards you can say whatever you want. Right now, we need to stay united, alongside a stadium that shows its true face in the second half and fights together with the team.”

He added: “You can say Spalletti is no good, this player is no good, get rid of everyone. But right now we need to be united, and this stadium must become our fortress again.”

Spalletti ended by thanking those who supported the team and asking for greater unity.

“Even if we have not made them completely happy, we still need our fans beside us,” he said. “We thank everyone who applauded us today and stood with us. This is a moment when we need to come together, stand as one, try to move forward and remain positive – which is not easy when we are short of numbers.

“It was a deserved victory for the players, who deserve a warm round of applause.”
