Tenerife striker Jesus de Miguel suffers cardiac arrest after collision with Andorra goalkeeper

The Tenerife v Andorra match in Spain’s Segunda Division was suspended after Tenerife striker Jesus de Miguel was knocked unconscious in a collision with Andorra goalkeeper Uno during stoppage time.

The incident happened at the Estadio Heliodoro Rodriguez Lopez with the score 2-2. De Miguel had chased an aerial ball beyond the halfway line when Uno came out of his goal and challenged in an attempt to clear it. The two players collided heavily, leaving the Tenerife forward motionless on the pitch.

Players from both sides immediately called for medical assistance as concern spread among those inside the stadium. Referee Manuel Angel Perez Hernandez showed Uno a red card following the collision.

Medical staff spent more than five minutes treating De Miguel, while the stadium fell silent. He was eventually carried from the pitch on a stretcher and placed in an ambulance equipped with medical equipment.

Given the seriousness of the situation, the referee stopped the match and informed both captains and coaching staffs that it had been suspended. The striker’s condition became the immediate priority, with the game and its result taking a back seat.

Uno, who was leaving the pitch after being sent off, returned to check on De Miguel. Tenerife officials and several of the player’s team-mates also gathered beside the ambulance, visibly shocked and anxious as medical staff continued their efforts.

De Miguel receives CPR in ambulance

Reports after the incident said De Miguel suffered a cardiac arrest as a result of the force of the collision. Paramedics performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation inside the ambulance, according to Spanish newspaper AS.

The medical intervention succeeded in restoring the player’s pulse. His condition then initially stabilised and he began breathing independently, although he remained unconscious.

The ambulance left the stadium for Hospital Universitario Nuestra Senora de la Candelaria, commonly known as La Candelaria Hospital, accompanied by medical staff. De Miguel was taken there for further examinations and continued treatment.

The latest updates indicated a slight improvement, with the striker able to breathe normally after being resuscitated by the emergency team. However, he was still unconscious and remained under medical care in hospital while awaiting the results of further tests and a detailed medical report.

Spanish newspaper Marca also reported on the incident, which turned the closing stages of the Segunda Division fixture into an anxious vigil as players, staff and supporters waited for news of De Miguel’s condition.
