NIS chief Shaibu backs Nigeria’s Flamingos to win 2026 U-17 Women’s World Cup

National Institute for Sports (NIS) Director-General and CEO Philip Shaibu believes Nigeria’s U-17 Women’s team, the Flamingos, have the quality and discipline required to win the ongoing 2026 U-17 Women’s World Cup.
Shaibu said the team could return home as world champions after closely following their preparations in Nigeria and praising the squad selected for the tournament.
The former professional footballer has been impressed by the way the Flamingos have applied a tactical, game-by-game approach. He said their performances had demonstrated the qualities of a side capable of challenging for the title.
Shaibu stressed that success in international football depends on maintaining focus, showing discipline and adapting to the demands of each match. He argued that no two fixtures should be approached in exactly the same way, with players required to respond to different opponents and situations.
He also praised the squad’s relationship with the technical crew, saying the players had shown a willingness to listen to instructions and carry out their tactical plans effectively, even when under pressure.
The NIS boss made his comments ahead of Nigeria’s match against Brazil and called on supporters across the country to back the Flamingos as they continue their campaign.
Shaibu also pointed to the number of leading opponents who have already been eliminated from the competition, saying the tournament was opening up for Nigeria.
“We should have butterflies in our stomachs because all the Asian teams have fallen. The Americans are next,” Shaibu stated.
Despite the pressure of the tournament, he expressed confidence that the Nigerian team would ultimately lift the trophy.
Shaibu then urged the players to stay focused as the competition progresses. He warned them against allowing distractions to affect their preparations and performances, while encouraging them to retain the clinical edge they have shown as they pursue global success.
