Aston Villa’s attacking threat puts Barcelona on alert at Camp Nou

Aston Villa arrive at Camp Nou with far more than a hope of making up the numbers, as Unai Emery’s side prepare to face Barcelona with one of Europe’s most productive attacks this season.
The visitors have never won at Barcelona’s home ground, but they bring a formidable record into the meeting. Aston Villa have scored 12 goals in the Champions League, making them the competition’s second-highest scorers alongside Liverpool. Only leaders Paris Saint-Germain, with 13, have scored more, while Barcelona are fourth on 11.
Emery’s attacking threat is led by Ross Barkley and Nicolas Jackson. Both players have scored three times in the competition so far, putting them among the leading contenders for the Champions League golden boot.
Aston Villa opened their campaign with an entertaining 3-2 victory over Club Brugge, followed that with a 6-0 win against Fenerbahce and then beat Viking Stavanger 3-1 in their most recent match.
Barcelona also began strongly, defeating Feyenoord 5-1 before a 4-1 victory over Galatasaray. Their momentum was checked, however, by a 4-2 defeat by Paris Saint-Germain.
The Spanish side have controlled more possession in the competition, averaging 61.7% according to figures published by Mundo Deportivo. Barcelona also have the tournament’s best passing accuracy at 92%, compared with Aston Villa’s 49.3% possession and 88% passing accuracy, which place them 17th in that ranking.
But Aston Villa’s threat lies in how efficiently they turn opportunities into goals. Nicolas Jackson has also registered eight shots on target, the second-highest total in the competition. He is level with Harry Kane and one behind leader Kylian Mbappe, who has nine.
Barkley and Aston Villa captain John McGinn, both 32, are also pursuing a notable club record. Each has scored four goals in European competition for Aston Villa and is four short of matching club great Gary Shaw’s record of eight Champions League goals, scored between 1981 and 1983.
Barcelona’s goals have been shared between Lamine Yamal, Karim Adeyemi and Raphinha, who have scored two each. Raphinha needs five more goals to become the club’s second-highest scorer in the competition. He currently has 20, behind Luis Suarez and Rivaldo on 25 each and Robert Lewandowski on 23.
Aston Villa are second in the overall standings with nine points and are aiming to remain in the top eight. Barcelona, meanwhile, need three points to avoid becoming embroiled in a complicated qualification battle after their defeat by Paris Saint-Germain.
The fixture listings also show Manchester United against Aston Villa in the Premier League and Atletico Madrid against Barcelona in La Liga on 08 November 2026.
