Manchester United fans throw tennis balls in Old Trafford protest before dramatic Roma comeback

Manchester United supporters threw tennis balls on to the pitch during their Champions League match against Roma at Old Trafford as anger over the club’s ownership and management intensified.

The protest took place during the fourth round of the league phase, with fans expressing their frustration at the team’s poor run of results and rising ticket prices. The demonstration had been planned in advance and promoted on social media, while further protests took place outside the stadium.

United began the game under significant pressure, having failed to win any of their previous nine matches in all competitions. That sequence had increased scrutiny on manager Michael Carrick, whose position was reported to be at risk.

According to Sky Sports, the timing of the protest was particularly difficult for the home side. Manchester United had fallen 2-0 behind within the opening 17 minutes, before supporters in the Stretford End threw a number of tennis balls on to the pitch in the 21st minute.

The game was briefly stopped as players helped remove the balls before play resumed.

Although the disruption lasted only a short time, it reflected the strength of feeling among the supporters, especially after United’s poor start against Roma. Their mood changed dramatically after half-time, however, as the hosts produced a remarkable comeback to win 3-2 at Old Trafford.

Bruno Fernandes began the revival by pulling a goal back from the penalty spot in the 58th minute. Matheus Cunha then levelled the match in the 83rd minute before the Brazilian completed the turnaround only three minutes later, scoring in the 86th minute to secure victory and finish with two goals.

The result turned a night that had begun with a protest and mounting pressure into an extraordinary victory for Manchester United.

Roma are scheduled to play Sassuolo in the Italian league on 07 November 2026, while Manchester United are due to face Aston Villa in the Premier League on 08 November 2026.
