Fabian Ruiz makes Champions League history as PSG hit Villarreal for six

Fabian Ruiz became only the second Spanish player to score twice against another Spanish club in Champions League history as Paris Saint-Germain defeated Villarreal 6-0 on Tuesday.

The Spain international struck in each half to help Luis Enrique’s side produce a dominant result against the Yellow Submarine in the fourth round of the league phase.

Ruiz’s first goal arrived in the 17th minute, when he scored Paris Saint-Germain’s fourth of the match. He completed his brace 10 minutes after the interval, adding the fifth in the 55th minute.

His achievement placed him in a select group of Spanish players to have scored two goals against a fellow Spanish club in the competition. According to statistics from Mister Chip, only one player had previously managed the feat.

That player was Miguel Angel Angulo, who scored twice for Valencia against Barcelona in a 4-1 victory in the second leg of their Champions League semi-final on 2 May 2000.

Ruiz’s performance came during a one-sided night for Paris Saint-Germain, who scored six times without reply against Villarreal. The result also gave the home side an unwanted place in Champions League history.

Villarreal became the first Spanish team to lose a Champions League match at home by a margin of six goals. The previous heaviest defeat suffered by a Spanish club in the competition was Deportivo La Coruna’s 5-0 loss to Monaco on 8 December 2004.

The result therefore combined a personal milestone for Ruiz with a record defeat for Villarreal, as Paris Saint-Germain continued their league-phase campaign with a comprehensive victory.
