Nigeria face Brazil in bid for historic U-17 Women’s World Cup final place

Nigeria’s Flamingos will take on Brazil in Wednesday’s FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup semi-final, with victory securing a place in the tournament’s championship match.
The Flamingos have shown resilience throughout the competition in Morocco, recovering from a difficult start to reach the final four. They now face a Brazilian team possessing considerable quality and attacking ambition.
For Hakeem Busari’s side, the match offers another chance to demonstrate their progress and growing belief, while moving one step closer to a potential tournament triumph.
Nigeria’s route to the semi-finals began with a setback, as they suffered a 2-1 defeat by Poland in their opening group game. That result left them with little room for error in their remaining fixtures and increased the pressure to respond immediately.
They did so with a hard-fought 2-0 victory over Puerto Rico before producing one of their strongest performances against defending champions North Korea.
The Flamingos defeated North Korea 3-1, combining attacking quality with tactical discipline to secure their place in the Round of 16. The result also gave Nigeria valuable momentum for the knockout stages.
Mexico provided the opposition in the next round, but Nigeria maintained their progress with a 2-1 win to reach the quarter-finals.
Their last-eight meeting with Venezuela proved to be another demanding contest. Neither side could break the deadlock for most of the match and extra time appeared increasingly likely. However, Azeezat Oduntan converted a decisive penalty in the 89th minute to give Nigeria a 1-0 victory and a place in the semi-finals.
Brazil threat
Brazil’s Greise Kelly will be one of the players Nigeria must closely monitor. The attacker has scored three goals and provided five assists in Morocco, making her one of the leading performers at the tournament and a major threat in the final third.
Nigeria will again look to goalkeeper Jane Ijirigho for a decisive contribution. Her displays, particularly in the knockout rounds, have been central to the Flamingos’ progress. Several important interventions have kept the team in contention during difficult periods.
Busari said reaching the semi-finals was a “dream come true” and made clear his desire to see Nigeria continue their impressive campaign.
“Reaching the semi-finals is a dream come true for me and a great achievement. I’m looking forward to it because I want to make my country proud. We want to give our best in the next match and show everyone what we can do,” he told FIFA.com.
Nigeria’s meeting with Brazil will determine which side advances to the final of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup.
