Kayode Features as Girona Secures First La Liga Victory
Nigerian striker Olanrewaju Kayode, on loan from Manchester City, marked his second appearance for newly-promoted Girona as they clinched a 1-0 victory against Malaga in the Spanish La Liga on Saturday. Kayode was introduced into the game with just nine minutes remaining, replacing Cristian Stuani. The decisive goal of the match was scored by Pedro Alcala in the 28th minute, securing Girona’s first win of the season.
This triumph has propelled Girona to third place in the La Liga table, boasting four points and trailing league leaders Real Sociedad, who are currently at the summit with six points.
Kayode had made his debut for Girona in their previous encounter, a 2-2 home draw against Atletico Madrid, in which he also emerged as a second-half substitute. He came close to netting a late goal in that game, demonstrating his potential impact on the team.
However, it is worth noting that Kayode did not make the cut for Gernot Rohr’s 23-man squad set to face Cameroon in the 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifiers on September 1st and September 4th. Despite his absence from the national team, his role at Girona and promising performances in La Liga will continue to be closely monitored, as he aims to make a significant contribution to his new club’s campaign.
