Ola Aina heaped praises on his teammates following his penalty miss as Nigeria thrashed South Africa 4-2 in a penalty shootout.
The game ended 1-1 in regulation and extra time, and it needed penalties for a deciding winner.
Terem Moffi stepped forward for the first and slotted it calmly to give the Super Eagles the advantage as Nwabali saved Bafana Bafana’s first kick.
Kenneth Omeruo’s panenka gave Nigeria a 2-1 lead when Ola Aina was called to extend the advantage but the Fulham left-back took a flight off the crossbar.
Another save from Nwabali and a decisive kick from Iheanacho ensured that Nigeria broke the semi-final jinx that haunted them in five of their last six attempts.
Aina reacted to his missed penalty via a video on his Instagram story, as he praised his teammates for saving him from a possible depression of being the reason they wouldn’t have played in the final.
“These boys saved me. I don’t care.”
