President Bola Tinubu has heaped praise on the Super Eagles for beating South Africa to the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final spot.
Nigeria thrashed Bafana Bafana of South Africa 4-2 on penalties at the Stade de la Paix in Bouake, Ivory Coast, on Wednesday night.
William Troost-Ekong gave Nigeria a 1-0 lead from the spit kick in the 67th minute after Victor Osimhen was brought down in the opposition box.
When it seemed like Nigeria was in control with another goal from Osimhen in the 86th minute, VAR called for a foul in the build-up play that led to a South Africa’s penalty as Alhassan Yusuf had fouled a player while trying to clear his line that led to a counter-attack.
Teboho Mokoena stepped up and converted in the 88th minute to force an extra time which led to an eventual penalties shootout as both sides were unable to add to their tally despite Bafana Bafana being reduced to ten.
All eyes were on South Africa’s Ronwen Williams, following his remarkable performance in the quarterfinals, but it was Nwabali who stole the spotlight as he saved two penalties to qualify Super Eagles for the final.
Mr President praised the team after the match for their efforts via his social media page.
“From the Southernmost cape of Africa to the Plains of Mauritania and the coast of West Africa…. You have made us all Proud to be Nigerians Go… Soar in the AFCON Finals. Well done, boys!”
